The Hirsche Smiles Foundation humanitarian dental team rides in the back of pick up trucks in May with their gear as they drive to remote Guatemalan mountain villages to treat individuals who are too remote for medical or dental services. They often share the road with livestock.

Dr. Lee Olson, formerly of Broomfield, Colo., now retired and living in Utah, prepares his patient for dental work as part of the Hirsche Smiles Foundation trip in May. Most Guatemalans he serves doing humanitarian dentistry have never seen a dentist nor ever will again.

A Guatemalan girl with a cotton roll in her mouth after a tooth extraction holds a blanket and hygiene kit. Though she is unable to smile, she is happy with these gifts the Hirsche Smiles Foundation humanitarian dentists and assistants gave her in May. They collect and carry hygiene kits, fleece blankets and stuffed animals in their baggage speficially for the children.

Sam Olson, a college student from Broomfield, Colo., teaches Guatemalan children how to brush their teeth while they wait to be seen by Hirsche Smiles Foundation humanitarian dentists in May. The children are wearing

Dr. Garry Brown and Dr. Lee Olson performed four root canals and restorations on Kimberly, a young, Guatemalan girl. The results gave her new-found confidence. The dentists on a Hirsche Smiles Foundation trip to Guatemala in May felt deeply rewarded by serving her.

A 5-year-old Guatemalan girl told Dr. Richard L. Call, a dentist from Westminster, Colo., in a Hirsche Smiles Foundation temporary dental clinic in Guatemala in May,” I just want to eat my food and not have it hurt. Can you help me?” Call said, “When I looked inside her mouth, I found 12 abscessed teeth. The rest all had cavities. Broke my heart.”
