A young Guatemalan girl gives a hug to Dr. Lee Olson, a humanitarian dentist with the Hirsche Smiles Foundation, after he finished dental work on her. Olson said it was a great opportunity to serve and so rewarding.

The Hirsche Smiles Foundation humanitarian dental team rides in the back of pick up trucks in May with their gear as they drive to remote Guatemalan mountain villages to treat individuals who are too remote for medical or dental services. They often share the road with livestock.

Dr. Lee Olson, formerly of Broomfield, Colo., now retired and living in Utah, prepares his patient for dental work as part of the Hirsche Smiles Foundation trip in May. Most Guatemalans he serves doing humanitarian dentistry have never seen a dentist nor ever will again.

A Guatemalan girl with a cotton roll in her mouth after a tooth extraction holds a blanket and hygiene kit. Though she is unable to smile, she is happy with these gifts the Hirsche Smiles Foundation humanitarian dentists and assistants gave her in May. They collect and carry hygiene kits, fleece blankets and stuffed animals in their baggage speficially for the children.

Dr. Richard L. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints partially funds the clinic.

Sam Olson, a college student from Broomfield, Colo., teaches Guatemalan children how to brush their teeth while they wait to be seen by Hirsche Smiles Foundation humanitarian dentists in May. The children are wearing
T-shirts painted to resemble teeth and gums. Sam demonstrates how to brush in circles by tickling their tummies with a giant toothbrush.
